Campfire Cooking: Easy, Delicious & Perfect for Lazy Camping Days

There’s something undeniably satisfying about cooking in the open air. Whether it’s a smoky breakfast as the sun rises or a foil-wrapped feast under the stars, food just tastes better when it’s made outside.

At our camping and campervan site on the North Yorkshire coast, we’re all about slowing down, switching off, and enjoying the simple things — like a good meal cooked over the flames.

So whether you’re a seasoned camper or trying it for the first time, here’s our laid-back guide to campfire cooking: low effort, big flavour, and made for lazy days.

First Things First: Fire Pit Ready? Campsife Cooking

Most of our campers hire one of our firepits on site. Saves bringing your own as they are bulky and dirty. We have everything you need on site, fire pits, wood, kindling and matches.

There are some things you should bring just to make cooking even easier:

  • A simple oven rack to go over the fire pit, we do have some but best to pring your own – sturdy and versatile
  • A roll of foil – your best friend for mess-free meals. We do have some availble in our campsite shop.
  • Long-handled tongs, heatproof gloves, and maybe even a marshmallow stick or two.

Tip: Do a bit of prep at home (chopping, marinating, etc.), so you can stay in lazy mode when you arrive.

Lazy, Crowd-Pleasing Campfire Meals

1. Sausage & Veggie Foil Packs Chop your favourite sausages, potatoes, peppers, and onions. Toss in olive oil, season well, and wrap tightly in foil. Cook over hot coals for 25–30 mins, flipping halfway through.

2. Campfire Nachos Layer tortilla chips, grated cheese, beans, and jalapeños in a foil tray. Cover with foil and heat on the grill for 10 minutes. Top with fresh salsa or smashed avocado. Ideal with a cold drink in hand.

3. The Lazy Breakfast Skillet Fry up bacon, mushrooms, cherry tomatoes, and crack in a couple of eggs — all in one pan. Serve with crusty bread or flatbreads warmed over the fire.

4. Banana Boats Slice a banana lengthwise (keep the skin on), stuff with chocolate and marshmallows, wrap in foil, and heat in the embers for 10 minutes. Dessert = sorted.

5. Yorkshire S’mores Swap the usual graham crackers for digestives or Yorkshire Parkin. Toast your marshmallow, add chocolate, sandwich it — and enjoy the gooey goodness.

No Fuss, Just Flavour, Campfire Cooking

Campfire cooking doesn’t have to be fancy. In fact, it’s better when it’s not. There’s something grounding about sitting by the fire, stirring a simple one-pot meal, or flipping sausages while the kids toast marshmallows nearby.

Our camping and campervan pitches offer just the right setting for this kind of simple pleasure — surrounded by countryside, sea air, and the space to really unwind.
